Au revoir...Fashion Faux Pas!

Sneakers are no longer a fashion faux pas! Thank you, universe.  A simple white tee, jeans, and fashion slip on sneakers are my go-to.  This does not give you permission to not comb your hair and put on make-up... pretty sure that would mess it all up.

I found these Reebok leopard print slip on sneakers at TJMaxx.com for only $29.99. First, leopard print makes everything better. Second, they have a memory-tech insole. Third, they are machine washable. I'm sold. If you order today, TJMaxx is shipping for free on every order!

See how Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (my fashion icon) pairs her sneakers with a dress, or with her perfected travel attire.

Romper Room

In the summer, I like to wear dresses.  I prefer them because they are cool, and EASY! Your hair could be in a knot, but you look instantly pulled together in a dress. As an alternative to my summer dress attire, I've added a couple rompers to my wardrobe. I feel effortlessly chic in my romper, and I pair it with a wedge or gladiator sandal... In the past, I've been hesitant to buy a romper because I am 5'8 and worry that they will be too short. I found these two rompers that are a good length, washable material, flattering, and a good price. Grab them now while they are on clearance, and before the summer is over. Sadly, I paid full-price, but I've worn them all summer long so it was worth it. (PS for mommies with infants, Jessica Simpson red romper on right would be easy to breastfeed in, where the neck is elastic and can easily be pulled down without stretching out.).

Left: Ann taylor loft Full Bloom romper, originally $79.50, now $54.88 and extra 40% off
Right: Jessica Simpson Nora Blossom Romper, orig. $59, now $17.39 at Belk (also in Macy's)

I'm now on the hunt for some pants jumpsuits to transition into fall.  I've splurged on this Joie navy Corrine jumpsuit, but on the lookout for some other cheaper alternatives. Stay tuned.

Thinking about going Diaperless?

Mommies, do you hear that?  I'm going diaperless!  Say what?... Let me clarify, I'm going diaperBAGless. I've tossed the diaper bag! You may think I'm premature throwing away the diaper bag while I still have a toddler in diapers. Well, I'm tired of the many pockets that I can NEVER seem to find anything, and diaper bags are just not fancy!

I am always looking for the perfect bag - large, but not too large. Pockets, but not too many. Sturdy, but not heavy. Long enough strap to crossbody when I need to have my arms free.

I've recently stumbled upon this new handbag designer Danielle Nicole at Nordstroms and Neiman Marcus.
Her bags are very affordable (most bags under $100), large enough, and lightweight.

I drooled over her signature "Alexa" crossbody tote, seen here on Alessandra Ambrosio. It comes in many different colors - grey, black, tan, and others.

However, I bought the Peyton Satchel

I loved the magnetic closure of the flap on the Peyton Satchel. Many times in the grocery store, I find myself carrying around a completely unzipped purse because it takes an extra 20 seconds to zip a bag.  Do you know what can happen in the 20 seconds you look away from a toddler?  So, the magnetic closure is a big selling point for me.  The nude/beige color will be perfect for spring & summer, and the bag can also be used as a crossover with its long strap.  This will easily carry my wallet, sippy cup, snack, water bottle, sunglasses, phone, keys, wipes, and... diapers! Hello, I'm not that crazy and going completely diaperless! :)

Watch your colors

These days I answer emails, shop online, and now write while either feeding a baby or holding a sleeping baby in my arms.  So, needless to say, my time is very limited... Getting ready in the morning with twin almost-four year olds and now a newborn has been a struggle.  I find my staple go-to outfit is jeans, white tee, flats... and I find that my simple outfit needs a splash of color.

Geneva makes these large face silicone watches are a great inexpensive way to instantly add color to a functional and practical outfit.  These watches are affordable, and can take a great deal of abuse - perfect for a mom's lifestyle.

This sky blue Geneva watch here is from Lulus.com and is only $21, and it also comes in coral and purple.  Sign up for the email newsletter, and receive an instant $5 off coupon sent to your email address provided.

You can find these watches ranging anywhere from $10-$35, from Amazon, Ebay, local and online boutiques.  But, be careful ordering them off of ebay - make sure your seller has excellent feedback, is USA based, and has a return policy.  I recently purchased a few for thank you gifts off of ebay because the price was very attractive, but two out of three arrived damaged!

With the low price of these watches, you can justify ordering more than one for yourself!!!

Mommy's Booties

Yes, it's been a while since I've last blogged, but I have a good excuse... I'm pregnant.  This excuse works for me in quite a lot of scenarios, and I'm using it in this instance, as well.  My twins stopped napping, which leaves the evening for me to do my Internet surfing.  Well, by the time my girls get to bed at night, I collapse on the couch, utterly exhausted.  I can barely make out an intelligent sentence to my husband (thank you pregnancy brain), nevermind write an interesting blog entry!

Well, I have bought something recently that was worth sharing with you.  Back in the summer I was in search of the perfect bootie, and found a Steve Madden suade bootie, but because it has a heel I found that I was barely wearing my adorable booties.  So, I continued my search for the perfect bootie - a low ankle boot with a low or no heel, and preferably in black.  Mama found them!!!

Nine West puts out a bootie ironically called the "Perfectpair."  It's was listed on Piperlime.com originally for $109, and is on sale right now for $74.99 (free shipping).  And, if you sign up on Piperlime's email list, they instantly email you a 15% off coupon.  The bootie runs true to size, and does not need to be broken in.  Don't order up a size to account for wearing with thick socks - in the spring and summer you will want to wear them with a cute sundress!

Do you like wine?

I must apologize for the lack of writing lately.  A few of you wrote to me, asking when I was next going to blog, and, well, we can just say I went on a blogging summer vacation!  I am now refreshed, and ready for Fall fashion!

I hope you ladies like wine... because wine is the IN color of the fall season!  I'm thrilled that color blocking will continue into the Fall, and we will still see colored jeans.  My must colored bottom this season will be a burgundy/wine-colored jean.  In fact, you can play with all shades of wine, mixing them together, and use them as a neutral.

Here, I used the wine color on the bottom, pairing it with a mustard yellow pullover sweater, tied in the colors with a scarf, and kept the shoes and accessories neutral.

(clockwise from left)
1. Pink Rose pullover sweater, Loehmanns.com, $19.99
2. Michael Stars Winter Woods scarf, Piperlime.com, $42.00
3. Ann Taylor Loft zoe straight leg pants in deep cabernet, Loft.com, $69.50
4. Gap suade loafer in tree trunk, Gap.com, $39.95
5. Alexis Bittar bangle, for locations visit LynEvans.comon sale for $79.99

Yes, you can always mix burgundy with cream or black, but how safe and boring!  If you aren't sure how to use burgendy as a neutral let this be a guide - Mix it with pink, deep green, mustard yellow or gold, or even a light blue works. Have fun this season with these cabarnet colors - drink it up!

Bad weather shoe

Raining outside?  NO, do NOT reach for your sneakers... Rain boots are cute, but are they really practical?  Can you wear them walking outside from your car, and wear them comfortably for another two hours shopping or at a play date?  Not really.

Take a look at these adorable shoes. You would never know these are Crocs, unless I told you.  They are a cute style, but more importantly, they are comfortable!  I take neighborhood walks in these shoes, take them to the playground and beach, and will also wear out to the mall.  These are a great go-to-shoe.  Personally, I like this "gold" color.  These waterproof slip-ons are listed as "gold," but are more of a nude color.

These shoes are $29.95 at shoebuy.com.  With a coupon code SUMMER12 you will receive 20% off + free shipping!

Bring on the rain!

Button Down Blouse

There is something so classic and chic about a white button down. You can dress it up easily with a skirt or slacks, and keep it casual with jeans or shorts. The problem is... what mother has time to iron a dress shirt?  To be honest with you, if I have to iron a piece of clothing it sits in my closet and just never gets worn.

I recently bought a Jones New York Iron-Free white button down long-sleeve blouse, and I'm so glad I did. EVERY wrinkle comes out in the dryer. I don't even turn on the iron! I promise, I am not lying. Now that the warmer weather is here, I've been rolling up the sleeves of my button-down, and pairing it with shorts and sandals, or for a funkier look I replace my sandals with a bootie.

Here, Jordan Brewster does it so well, that I have replicated the outfit below, where each item is practical and affordable...All under $100! I'm loving the Melie Bianco "Terri" tote that is large enough to hold sippy cups and snacks. Another great find are these Dick's Cottons sunglasses that have been worn by many celebrities - only $59.95 - see Dickscottons.com for more colors and styles.
1. Fossil Women's Watch, SmartBargains.com, $63.42 (free shipping)
2. Jones New York Easy Care Signature Shirt, Macys.com, $49.99 (was $64)
3. Dicks Cottons "Cape Cod-Mayflower Wayfarer" sunglasses, Dickscotton.com $59.95
4. a.n.a. Multikeeper Buckle Belt, JCPenney.com, $18
5. Tory Burch Abitha Leather Flip-Flop, NeimanMarcus.com, $95
6. J.Crew Factory 5" Oxford Chino Short in poppy, Jcrew.com, $29.50 (was $36.50)

April Showers

With Spring finally here (YEAH!) time to put away our heavy winter coats, and bust out the trench coat. Every woman should own a classic trench coat, as it never goes out of style. With the amount of time I spend outside - the playground, running errands, at the grocery store, more often that not no one sees what's under my trench coat... I am meaning my outfit, of course!

Ideeli is running a great promo right now on trench coats, which ends on April 3rd. This trench by Ivanka Trump is listed for $79.99 (was originally $240), and there are many other designers all at the same price point, such as Miss Sixty, Tommy Hillfiger, Vince Camuto, Kenneth Cole New York, Nine West.  You will need to give your email and password to enter into the sale.

Dirty Hair

There are days that we only get a five-minute shower... who am I kidding, a three-minute shower! So, for those days, no need to wash and dry your hair.  Instead, have dry shampoo on hand for those oily roots.

Before you run out to the drugstore, and grab the cheapest bottle of dry shampoo, read on. I've tried so many different brands and kinds of dry shampoo, but I continue to go back to my favorite - Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo (in powder form).  Personally, I prefer the powder form, as it is easier to control.  I also find that the spray form runs out TEN times as fast as the powder form.

Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo, $19 for 2.5 oz bottle
Sephora.com (for 15% off March 30-April use coupon code CHICBI)

Here are a few guidelines when using dry shampoo:
1. Your hair must be dry when you using dry shampoo, hence the “dry.”
2. Start off by parting your hair in sections.... your entire head does not need to be powdered. I normally only powder the side I part my hair.
3. Poor a small amount of powder in your palm, and apply by dusting the powder into your roots along your part using an old bronzer or blush brush.  Use sparingly – you can always add more, and a little goes a long way!
4. If you use to much, break out the hair dryer and blow out your over powdered roots. Also try moving your part by an inch or two.
5. Always set your finished hairstyle with your favorite aerosol hair spray. The alcohol in the hairspray helps absorb oil. Try Sebastian's Professional Shaper Hair Spray for a lightweight, brushable hair spray.
6. Uh-oh, you ran out?... Grab the baby powder off the changing table, and use much more sparingly.  Or, use face powder - it blends in with your scalp better than the baby powder!

Working Mom

After a day at work, the first thing I want to do is kiss my girls as I walk through the door. After getting kisses, the second thing on my mind is to get out of my "work" clothes FAST. Don't we all race to the bedroom, and change into comfies before those cheeto-stained little fingers can dirty up that dry-clean only blouse?

I recently stumbled upon this new line of clothing geared for mothers.  The line is called SHADE Clothing, a line designed by a mother who desired clothing to fit her lifestyle as a stylish and active mom. In this line most items are machine washable! AH! While many pieces are too conservative or plain for my taste, there are many pieces that are worth mentioning. First is this machine washable black blazer!... Say what? Yes, it is machine washable!  It's on sale for only $39.99 (was $79.50), and no code needed for free shipping!

10 Tips for Staying Stylish and Comfortable with Kids in Tow

Being a mom of twin toddlers, I understand striving to be fashionable while being comfortable is a challenge.  Here are ten practical tips to making you a more stylish mom!

1. Save your sneakers for workouts!  We've all been there - We are so thrilled that we just got three bodies ready in under an hour, we have the kids suited up ready to go in the car, that we grab the first shoe we see.   That shoe inevitably becomes a sneaker.  Ladies, you kill an outfit with sneakers!  Any outfit can turn frumpy by adding a running shoe to the mix.  Invest in a cute pair of slip-on flats for that "Go-To" shoe.

2. Make time for make-up.  My rule is to never leave home without at least concealer and blush on.  Don't have time to put on make-up?  You're too busy, you say.  Well, every mother is always busy, so key is fitting in time to put on some make-up.  If you have 3 minutes to get ready, I would rather you spend the majority of time on your make-up. A messy bun or ponytail are both chic, and only take 30 seconds, however, the bags under your eyes aren't going to take care of themselves.  With make-up now available in stick forms, my make-up routine takes me less than 3 minutes.

3.  Use dry shampoo.  There are days that we only get a five-minute shower... who am I kidding, a three-minute shower!  So, for those days, no need to wash and dry your hair.  Instead, have dry shampoo on hand for those oily roots.  Before, dry shampoo was only available salons or cosmetic shops, but you can now find dry shampoo in a powder or spray form at your local drugstore.  Personally, I prefer the powder form, as it is easier to control.  Your hair must be dry when you using dry shampoo, hence the “dry.”  Simply, part you hair in sections to apply the dry shampoo to your roots.  Use sparingly – you can always add more, and a little goes a long way!

4. No more diaper... bags!  You thought I was going to say no more diaperS, weren't you?  Ah, wishful thinking for us toddler moms.  No more diaper bags, fanny packs, or backpacks.  There are so many stylist totes you can use as an alternative.  Just make sure that the top has a zipper enclosure before purchasing.  If you are still in baby mode, and like the pockets for bottles, there are many stylish baby bags now out there.  I'm pretty sure I've never seen a stylish fanny pack or backpack - so those should be on the never-ever list.

5.  Add a scarf.  If you are only going to buy just one piece this spring, you must buy a scarf!  A scarf can dramatically transform an outfit.  Pair it with items you already have in your closet - jeans and a solid t-shirt (long sleeve or short). Take off the scarf while at home cooking or playing with your kids, but add the scarf when leaving the house, and you have instant chic!

6.  Color Block. Who would've thought that the fashion industry invented a trend just for moms?  Well, maybe they didn't invent the color block trend for mothers, but it's almost as though they had us in mind because - IT IS SO EASY!  This color block trend is a mother's dream - pick any color t-shirt and colored bottoms, put them together, and instant style! Mommies, do not miss this fashion trend.  Tee-shirt and jeans have never been so fashionable!

7. No more "fat" clothes!   It's inevitable to have to buy maternity and transition post-baby clothes, but keep those to a minimum, and invest in pieces that you can wear during your pregnancy and after.  Open cardigans and sweater vests are perfect pieces for hiding those extra pounds.

8. New jeans.  No, you do not need to buy new jeans, rather revive your jeans and make them LOOK new!  If you're a mom like me, you live in your jeans, and even with all the wash care I take, I can't seem to avoid my jeans fading.  Go to your local craft store, buy a package of clothing dye, soak for 30 minutes, and you have a pair of new jeans!

9. Wearing jewelry.  Being a mom, especially a mom to young children, I know how hard it is to wear jewelry when you have little grabby hands that like to take hold of anything within reach.  For this reason, I have resorted to wearing primarily colorful studs, a bold watch, and/or cuff.  With all the neon colors in for spring, one bold item is more than enough.

10. Invest in a classic coat. Considering the amount of time us mothers spend outside - playgrounds, picking kids up at school, running errands, etc., all mothers should own a classic coat.  Save the fleece jackets and sweatshirts for playing ball at home or yard work.  Beyond those situations, do not be tempted to wear a frumpy "mom" jacket.

I admit, there are days that I don't leave the house.  My two year old buddies may be the only ones to witness my outfit for the day, but putting myself together means I am taking the time to do something for myself, and hey, it makes me feel better about ME!

Mixing Prints

When I hear "runway trend," I immediately think UNWEARABLE clothing from another world! Isn't that true? An image of a size zero model comes to mind, wearing a silk gown (bra-less) and 5 inch heels, hair slicked backed in a high bun, neon yellow eye shadow and bright red lipstick... oh, and a drawn in uni-brow. We've all seen those "out-there" pictures of these types of runway shows in our magazines, and I'm sure you have also doubted that actual human beings wear those ensembles in public.

Well, my tune has changed this season. For Spring 2012, there have been many fashion trends from the runway that have been practical, such as animal prints, color block (see previous posts), and also mixing prints.  I personally love the combination of mixing stripes with florals.

Here I've come up with a few different combinations to show you that mixing prints can be worn as an everyday outfit. The mix can be simple by staying in the color family, and still work.

Zara Striped Organic T-Shirt, $16.90
Banana Republic Floral-print Full Mini Skirt, $89.50
(through 2/26, use code AWARD35 for 35% off)
Lilly Pulitzer Coral Siesta Cuff, $68

Banana Republic Soft-Wash Gingham Shirt in royal purple, $64.50
Zara Printed Shorts, $59.90
Kate Spade Gumdrop Stud in yellow, $38.00

Ann Taylor Back Zip Striped 3/4 Sleeve Top in fresh petal, $38
Aqua Striped Enamel Hinge Bangle, Bloomingdales, $25
GAP Floral Scarf, $29.50 (available in store only - sold out online)
